Tips for Freelance Writers

As a part time copywriter, you’ve got to get creative with your time management. So I’m always looking to add a few minutes of writing or marketing time to my day. Interestingly enough, every time I think I’ve maxed out my schedule, I find new time. For example:

  • Wake up earlier: +30 minutes writing time.
  • Each lunch at my desk: +20 minutes writing time.
  • Skip my workout: +30 minutes writing time, +lbs.

Money on the toilet

Well recently I found a new place to add time to my writing work schedule—the toilet. Okay, you might be grossed out, but normally I’d read a book, so what’s the difference? Just hear me out.

This morning I made 50 bucks while “taking care of business.” No exaggeration. And I did it by writing web copy for a client who will remain nameless. All it took me was 15 minutes. Granted, I don’t always write copy that quickly. But when it’s a job where you have to do a million pages, after a couple of them you start flying through the rest.

Where can you fit more time into your schedule?

Maybe you don’t want to write while on the toilet. I get it. But if you’re going to build a part time writing career, you’re going to have to think outside the box. Figure out where the dead time in your schedule is and replace it with writing. Running low on work? Then use that time for marketing. Hit up Twitter or Facebook. Put together a list of leads. Draft a mail out. Whatever it is, if you’re going to ever take the plunge and make some real cash, you’re going to have to become a master of time management.
